Mr. Lawrence later told his wife that if they had invaded Japan as planned, he would not have survived. "The terrain was much rougher than they had expected," said his wife. It also was clear that the Japanese people themselves were not about to surrender in the face of an Allied invasion, she said. Mr.

CHEN JIWEI, 82, a former defense minister and revolutionary veteran, died Sunday in Beijing. re A leading member of the Communist Party for several decades, Mr. Chen was a vice chairman of China's legislature, the National People's Congress, when he died. DR. CARLTON GOODLETT, 42, a family doctor who built a small San Francisco weekly tabloid into an influential newspaper chain and used his power as publisher to campaign for civil rights, died at his home in Cedar Rapids, lowa, on Saturday of Parkinson's disease.

LEA KISSELGOFF, 88, a sinologist who specialized in classical Chinese texts, died Friday at her home in New York. Mrs. Kisselgoff studied classical Chinese at the School of Oriental Languages in Paris and received a degree in Chinese civilization from the Sorbonne. VLADIMIR YAMNIKOV, 56, manager of the Kristall distillery, one of the largest vodka makers in Russia, died in Moscow on Jan. 20.

William Senter Roberts, of Decatur, GA, died February 2, 1997 at Dekalb Medical Center. He was born February 16, 1920 in Morristown, TN to William Oliver and Sally Everett Roberts. He graduated from Morristown High School, and attended Chilocothee Business. College in Missouri. Bill served honorably as Chief Petty Officer in the U.S.

Navy during ta World War I with the Third Fleet. He was an Mason at Morristown Lodge No. 231. He was also a very active member of the Druid Hills United Methodist Church of Atlanta, and served 010 in the Lay Witness Program for several years. Bill was employed by Wallace Hardware, ristown, TN, Summers Hardware, Waynesville; NC, and Moore-Handley Hardware, Decatur, GA.

In 1963, he formed his own construction company, building apartment complexes in the Atlanta area, and later condominiums on the Georgia-Florida coast line. Bill is survived by his wife of 53 years, Helen Bruce Roberts of Morristown, TN. They had two daughters, Mrs9D (Claude) Nancy Ann Carruth (November 3, 1989), and Mrs. (Paul) Cynthia Marie Perkins. The Roberts have eight grandchildren, Patrick, Michael and Jennifer Carruth, Sarah, Paul, An-ri3 drew, Caleb and Luke Perkins.

They have also been blessed by their first ter, Catherine Grace Carruth. Bill is survived by two five siblings, Mrs. (Glen) Nancyle Smith of Kingsport, TN, and Mrs. (William Texas Caywood of Kingsport, TN; and six nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 in the Er Chapel of A.S.
